AI in the Boardroom: The evolving role of INED’s in Governance, Trust and Transformation
Last week, basis.point was delighted to host its inaugural Independent Non-Executive Director (INED) event, kindly sponsored by BNY at The Shipping Office overlooking the River Liffey.
The event marked an important milestone for basis.point as our first dedicated thought leadership gathering for existing Patrons and Supporters who serve as INEDs across the Irish corporate sector. As individuals who already support our work through personal giving, the evening was designed to offer something relevant, valuable and intellectually engaging in return, while also deepening their connection to our mission.
In welcoming guests, CEO Edel O’Malley spoke about the considerable influence INEDs have within organisations and communities. While leadership is often exercised around the boardroom table, it can also be used to create opportunities, build connections and champion causes that matter.

The highlight of the evening was an engaging panel discussion on the evolving role of boards in overseeing AI-driven transformation.
Moderated by basis.point Board Director and INED Eve Finn, the panel of Marie McGinley, Itxaso Madina, Nicola Flannery and Paul Kilcullen shared practical insights drawn from governance, technology, legal and financial services sectors, providing attendees with valuable perspectives for their own board roles.
The discussion reinforced the importance of balancing innovation with oversight, concluding that organisations which combine strong governance, ethical practices and a culture of responsible innovation will be best placed to realise AI’s benefits while protecting trust and resilience.
And whilst the conversation itself was thought-provoking, the wider purpose of the event was equally important. basis.point is fortunate to have a growing community of INEDs among its Patrons and Supporters. These individuals bring extensive experience, networks and influence, all of which can help create brighter futures for children experiencing educational disadvantage.
Our ambition is for supporters to see their relationship with basis.point as extending beyond financial contribution. Personal giving reflects a commitment to our vision of educational equality, but the greatest impact often comes through advocacy, introductions, connections and helping us open doors to new opportunities.

As Edel O’Malley noted in her closing remarks,
