basis.point Week delivers high on impact

Colleagues at KPMG celebrate their contribution to changing lives through basis.point

Adding new meaning to the term “All Hands”, this year we were delighted to see so many individuals playing their part in spreading the word about basis.point!  Building on the success of last year, basis.point week 2024 was bigger and better!

The week itself is conceived as a way to strengthen the emotional connection between patronage and lives transformed, to encourage engagement and raise awareness amongst the wider funds community. And it didn’t disappoint.

All told, almost thirty Champions, including Board members, committee members and volunteers, embraced the idea and committed to host an event or join us for the annual table quiz, celebrating in one form or another, the progress that basis.point has made and the impact achieved.

Leona Egan Teen Turn Ambassador shares her story at KPMG

Recognizing the powerful role of  student voice, we worked together with our Prestige and Premier Patrons, to carefully match up young speakers with appropriate Patron organisations.   Leona Egan, Teen-Turn ambassador, visited the team in KPMG and put into context the life changing impact that these supports can have.

Leona grew up in an area of socio-economic disadvantage where education was undervalued.  From an early age she worked part time in a local supermarket and by the time she was in her senior cycle she was close to dropping out of school.  This all changed when one day, as a student at St Dominic’s College in Ballyfermot, she was introduced to Teen-Turn who sparked an interest in coding.

And Teen-Turn gave her much more than technical skills, most importantly, they offered mentorship, guidance and motivation and crucially, they introduced her to a group of like minded young women.  Overcoming both physical and economic adversity, Leona is now studying at Trinity College Dublin thanks directly to the support of our patrons.

At other in-house events,  teachers and mentors shared their experiences.  Bernie O’Reilly spoke along with her student Rhianna Reynolds from Ballyshannon, Co Donegal at the Waystone  lunch and learn.  Bernie shared her experience in teaching the Foróige Network for Teaching entrepreneurship (NFTE) programme and the impact it has had on young people before introducing Rhianna who brought to life the benefit through sharing her own personal journey.

David from St Pauls (The Brunner) boys school shares his story

Northern Trust had the privilege of hearing impact stories from three wonderful students who had benefited from participation in the Business in the Community programmes run with funding from basis.point.

Ella, David and Adam, each felt that they wouldn’t be following their career choices had it not been for their participation in the mentoring programmes and thanked the basis.point community for their commitment to levelling the playing field and helping them to continue in further education and reach their educational potential.

It is events  like these that highlight the profound impact of our partnerships and the importance of continuing to support education to foster youth empowerment. Kennedy Wilson welcomed Eimear Collins of Archways, who shared successes of their Think Big partner programme. Caceis heard about the DCU Changemakers programme, First Sentier welcomed Kinia and Morgan Stanley heard from some of the ELI home visitors.
