Conor MacGuinness of Waystone to run Chicago Marathon 2024

Colleagues from across the Irish Funds Industry gather in Ringsend to run a 5K

The iconic Chicago Marathon has long been a significant individual fundraising event. This year we are delighted to say that Conor MacGuinness has agreed to run on behalf of basis.point and Prestige Patron Waystone are rowing in to support him.

So if you see this man pacing the streets around town, give him some encouragement and congratulate him on taking on the challenge of running the iconic Marathon and for setting himself the target, along with his Waystone colleagues, of raising over €30,000 to help combat educational disadvantage.

Education has always been important to Conor and offering every child an equal chance at reaching their potential is motivating Conor in his endeavour.

Deep issues of social and economic inequality underlie educational disadvantage, and many young children face formidable obstacles. Over 250,000 children in Ireland are living in enforced deprivation according to the latest Survey of Income and Living conditions (SILC 2023) published by the Central Statistics Office.  The challenge for everyone to reach their potential requires effort, but for kids experiencing familial poverty, intergenerational unemployment, social isolation, homelessness and lack of role models, it’s monumental.

Waystone and wider industry support drive fundraising efforts!

Given the Summer that was in it, Conor’s Waystone colleagues opted for an Olympic sporting triple header to assist in his fundraising.

First up was was a 70km cycle around North Dublin undertaken by a group of approximately 25 Waystone employees on 5 July 2024.

This was followed by a community 5km Park Run in both Dublin and Tipperary. Over 100 colleagues from Waystone and other industry colleagues gathered on a glorious September sunny morning.

Taking their lead from experienced marathon runner, Conor MacGuinness of Waystone, anything seemed possible. Almost 100 runners and walkers from the industry showed up on a glorious autumnal September morning. We were delighted to have teams from BBH, Deloitte, First Sentier Investors, Grant Thornton, HSBC, IFDA, Jupiter Asset Management, Maples, Matheson, The Panel, TMF and Waystone participating and showing their support. First across the line was Waystone’s own, Patrick O’Reilly in an incredible time of 17.03 minutes followed closely by Jennifer Dobbyn of Maples and Conor himself in about 20 minutes.

But it wasn’t the finishing time that mattered, it was the general sense of comradery that we all felt. A fun day out, joining together to help young people less advantaged, to reach their potential through education.

Thanks to registration fees and the support of the wider funds community, Conor has already raised over €21,000 towards combatting educational disadvantage. This will go some way towards lifting many young people beyond their financial and social limitations.

Yet the scale of the problem is immense and Conor and his Waystone colleagues are eager to do more.

The third and main event itself will take place on 13 October 2024 when Waystone’s Global Head of Relationship Management, Conor MacGuinness, to run the Chicago Marathon.
