Declan McCluskey of BNP Paribas to run Boston Marathon 2023

The iconic Boston Marathon has long been our most significant individual fundraising event of the year. This year we are delighted to say that Declan McCluskey has been selected to run on behalf of basis.point and prestige Patron BNP Paribas are rowing in to support him.

Education has always been important to Declan and offering every child an equal chance at reaching their potential is motivating Declan in his endeavour. Reaching your life potential for anyone requires effort, but for kids experiencing familial poverty, intergenerational unemployment, social isolation, homelessness and lack of role models it’s monumental.

Running an iconic marathon like Boston whilst helping kids, experiencing such disadvantage, at the same time, is a genuine privilege. I will do all everything I can to reach my fundraising goal and truly appreciate your support

The funds raised will go towards programmes like the home visiting programme called ParentChild+. Over a two year period, Home Visitors visit young families in their homes and teach parents how to model oral language, reading and play in their twice weekly visits. The families then continue the activities in their own time, helping their child and his/her siblings to develop their language, literacy and numeracy skills and start school ready to succeed.

Another example of the type of programme supported is our new Maths Whizz programme which is being rolled out nationwide in partnership with Kinia. Using gamification, this programme allows young students to progress through the maths curriculum at their own speed, enabling the classroom teacher to manage children of different abilities within the same class. Early indications are that using the Maths Whizz tool brings an average improvement of almost 21 months in the child’s maths age during an academic year.

Calling on friends of basis.point to a 5k in the Phoenix Park

Colleagues from the Irish funds sector getting behind their marathon runner

To kick start Declan’s training, he has organised a 5km run in the Phoenix Park on Saturday 25th March in association with DASH. The event takes place at 10 at the Hole in the Wall Pub at the Phoenix Park. Suitable for all ages to RUN or WALK, we will have the incredible Gary O’Hanlon warming everyone up from 9.30am.

You can register for the event here. Tickets cost €25 and includes a complimentary coffee from DASH cafe, with the first 100 to sign up receiving a free event t-shirt.

And if running a 5k sounds intimidating, Gary is leading a couch to 5k training every Tuesday evening to get you race ready!

How to donate

If running isn’t your thing, we are hoping that everyone in the industry will get behind Declan to help him reach his target. Donating couldn’t be easier.

Simply click on his Just Giving Fundraising page or for corporate donations please donate directly to basis.point here.

Running the iconic Boston Marathon will be tough, but the fundraising element will be even tougher. €20,000 will go a long way towards helping parents give their children the best start in life. Let’s get behind Declan. Run Declan Run!
