The future of the funds industry is in good hands! Last week the basis.point Battle of the Firms Table Quiz, organised by the Supporters Committee and a team of volunteers from Brown Brothers Harriman and Maples Group rounded off a busy basis.point day.

160 professionals from over 20 different organisations within the Irish funds sector, settled in for a wonderful evening of comradery, laughter and fun.

Quiz master for the night was Sean Buckley and together with DJ Niall Dalton whose musical interpretations were designed to nudge teams in the right direction, they produced another stellar evening.

This year’s quiz was perfectly pitched for most teams but it required superhuman smarts to claim the trophy! Matheson managed to get 59 out of a possible 64 questions correct. I mean…who does that? And runners up IQ-EQ, BBH and Northern Trust just one or two questions behind.

Oluwamayowa Naomi Adeniji, Teen-Turn alumni and ambassador

And whilst the evening was mostly about fun and networking, we were all enthralled by the words of Naomi Adeniji, Teen-Turn alumni and ambassador, who told her personal story and brought to life the impact that each of us can have by supporting basis.point.

Naomi came to Ireland as a seven year old non native speaker. Issues with moving to a new country considerably disrupted her education and in her own words “she simply coasted her way through school”.

When she was around 15 her career guidance teacher noticed that Naomi wasn’t reaching her potential. She was good at maths, good at science but was not engaged and was drifting.

She introduced her to Teen-Turn, one of our education partners who placed Naomi with ResMed, a biomedical engineering company for a two week summer internship. Naomi absolutely loved her experience and it reignited her desire to learn and achieve. She participated in all of the different Teen-Turn workshops and programmes, culminating in building a social enterprise app for Technovation which she went on to win.

Naomi’s story is typical of the many teenage girls that Teen-Turn inspire throughout the country. They are forming a network of talented, confident, inspirational young women. Naomi is now a student of Structural Engineering in her third year at Trinity College Dublin and is herself giving back as an active ambassador and mentor with Teen-Turn.

Runners up Claire Tubridy and Vanathi Muhilan, IQ-EQ

And so to the prizes. Team Matheson finally managed to wrestle the trophy away from friendly rivals and defending champions Maples Group.

In fact, there was little between the top teams, with an ‘against the clock tie break’ needed to separate IQ-EQ’s team “Girls just wanna have Funds” and Brown Brother Harriman’s Smartinis, for second and third place respectively.

Interestingly, it was the finance round that proved decisive with many in the room needing to brush up on their own area of experteese!

Thanks to our sponsors Brown Brothers Harriman, Maples, Matheson, and Northern Trust. Sincere thanks also to James Dalton of BBH for organising such a successful event on behalf of the basis.point supporters committee and a special mention to his dad Niall, a professional event manager, who volunteered and brought a spark to the night!

1st Place Matheson Shay Lydon, Darragh Casey, Joe O’Hara, Philip Lovegrove.
2nd Place IQ-EQ Claire Tubridy, Vanathi Muhilan,
3rd Place BBH Melanie Dunne, Elaine Martin, Cathal Boylan, Tom Seery

And finally, we extend a warm welcome to our new supporters and followers. Thanks to everyone who came along and helped create such a wonderful evening. Book early for next year!
